Bringing Warmth to Meadowlands’ Elders
On a crisp winter’s day, June 11, 2026, the Ndofaya Blue Note Jazz Club (NBN Jazz Club) extended its hand of community support beyond the stage and into the hearts of Meadowlands’ most cherished residents—the elderly at St Joseph Ithuteng Old Age Home.
The visit, marked by a generous donation of heaters to the home, was a testament to the club’s commitment to uplifting the community that has embraced its jazz sessions since the club’s founding in December 2024 .
A Community Rooted in Care
St Joseph Ithuteng Campaign, as the home is formally known, is a non-profit organisation that has been serving the Meadowlands community for decades. Founded on June 2, 2000, by Fr. Bongani Sithole, the home was established after research identified a pressing need for services in the area .
The organisation provides an essential safety net for elders from disadvantaged backgrounds, many of whom have experienced abuse, neglect, homelessness, or poverty . Beyond its residential care, the home also runs a vital Home-Based Care programme, where caregivers assist elderly individuals in the community with daily tasks such as bathing, feeding, and ensuring medication is taken on time .
Warming Hearts This Winter
The donation of heaters was more than just a gift of warmth; it was a gesture of solidarity. As winter descends on Gauteng, the need for adequate heating becomes critical, especially for the elderly. The NBN Jazz Club’s contribution ensures that the home’s residents can stay warm and comfortable during the cold months.
The club, known for its monthly jazz sessions held on the first Saturday of every month at the White House in Meadowlands East, has always viewed its mission as extending beyond music . “We believe jazz music creates an ambience of excitement, enthusiasm, determination, and emotion,” the club’s ethos states, and this sense of community passion naturally extends to caring for the neighbourhood’s senior citizens.
The Ithuteng home is located at 519 Senzangakhona Street in Meadowlands Zone 4, next to KwaPhalo Primary School—a location familiar to many in the area . The donation brought smiles to the faces of the residents, many of whom have lived in Meadowlands for generations.
More Than Just Jazz
As a member-driven organisation dedicated to preserving and advancing jazz music in South Africa, the Ndofaya Blue Note Jazz Club understands that true artistry flourishes in a caring community. This donation aligns with the club’s vision to be the leading jazz club in Gauteng that connects jazz lovers and promotes cultural values .
